FWIW, there are plenty of laws on the books that permit people to do what they want with regard to civil relationships to include common law marriage.
FWIW, still it's worth a lot, in attorney's fees and paperwork. That sort of legalism was not given a second thought by me and my husband, automatically grandfathered into the system.

Maybe from another view it could be stated my heterosexual expenses could have exceeded any civil union legal expense, what with the bridal gowns I tried on, contemplated, the reception, cake, menu planning for mushroom ravioli and all... The Bishop's wife thought it excessive, and she kept saying it would be better and wise to just go to Reno or Las Vegas.

True story.

Point being I had a choice, outside any added legal expense.
