Subject: The problem I have

is that the church's position keeps changing, whith no explanation. The church's position on blacks holding the priesthood changed, but the prophet explained why. The church's position on polygamy changed, but the prophet explained the reason.

But when it comes to this one issue--abortion--the official policy has changed with no explanation. I don't understand it. And there are many people who today say "Abortion is OK in these circumstances because the prophet says so." Or "I can't support the CP's 100% pro-life position because it contradicts what the prophet says." But the problem I have with that is that 30 yrs ago the CP and the Church would have been in agreement. If I understood better the reason for the change in church policy I would better know now to defend the exceptions the church allows for today. Without that explanation, I choose to follow the more strict understanding of abortion, the church teaching that I was given when I was young...er. Younger. When I was younger. :D

You're right to mistrust a dr like that. There was a lady in our ward in Milwaukee who was several months pregnant when dr's told her her baby would be born severly deformed, that tests showed he probably didn't even have a brain. This was a child they'd tried for years to conceive and she was devestated. But she chose to carry the baby to term and gave birth to a perfectly health boy. Absolutely no trace of the deformities the dr's were convinced this baby had.
