that my dd is active duty military...so I do see this from the inside out angle. I have been mulling this over because he is going to be getting an all expense paid trip for a year+ somewhere (not Iraq) in the not so distant future, so I have been soul searching. I have been wondering, as posted above, what would happen if we did pull out of everywhere. Would it create a big vacume...would it be bad for foreign ecomomies who lose the $$$$$$ of money made from military and families that live there...what about the church influence. I know first hand that the downsizing in Germany is going to hit the economy badly there...not to mention the fact that even the German church leaders question what is going to happen to the church when we leave. I believe it is part of the reason that L.Tom Perry was sent on a special assignment to live there for 3 years...to help prepare them for that . The fact that where the military is, has generally been very good for the church is an important factor. But then I think that it's time for them to stand for themselves. There are many Germans who want us out, but there are many that want us to stay too. I do actually believe in the end, that it is time for us to leave Germany at least at the current numbers that we are at. As far as the Arab world goes, there is no doubt many want us out and as I ponder free agency, God doesn't force His children to do anything. Chuck's comments above about WWI and II were interesting and I have heard all that said before. I'm still up in the air about it all. I guess for me it comes down to this question. If there is a real threat (I know that what is perseved as a real threat is still up for debate and for me I am still inclined to believe that 9-11 wasn't a mass conspiracy on Bush's part) then when is it appropriate to act...even to the point of a preventitive measure? Even in the scriptures according to my limited understanding, the Nephites acted to protect themselves. I guess, perhaps the key lies in KNOWING what is a legitimate threat. As far as my dh's involvement in the miltary, we stay in because everytime we pray about it, we get the answer to stay in and I think that it is for the sole purpose (on dh's part) to be of service to the Lord with the people we come in contact with. At first I thought that was kind of and odd way to be of service, until I saw last year that the church is looking for retired military couples to serve missions in areas where there is a large military presence to help THEM. We try to do that now. Luckily, dh is in a humanitarian job and isn't even allowed to carry a gun generally, so he doesn't have that struggle. Have to be off now. May say more on the topic later.
