Subject: Liverpool Pilots- 1800s

How would I search for information about several ancestors who were pilots or master pilots living in Liverpool? Would such an occupation be in the Royal Navy or would it be for a private shipping company or what? All three of my ancestors had the same name: Thorley Lester b. 1837; Thorley Lester b. 1814; and Thorley Lester estimated birth 1790s. The latter Thorley is recorded as voting in 1832 in the Liverpool Poll Book. Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Liz (Sacramento, California)
