I was so pleased to hear that your experience at the Indie had been such a good one. For myself I have always felt that my experience there has been of great value to me all of my life. I am now 73 and have lived in Canada for the last 47 years. When I left the Indie in 1943 my father articled me to a Chartered Accountant. I was able to stand it for about 18 months and then one day went to Cambridge and joined the Royal Corps of Signals. I became what today would be called a radio technologist. Was stationed in Egypt, Palestine,Cyprus and British Somaliland. As I said in a previous letter to someone else from the Indie the army was like going to a holiday camp where one was housed fed and clothed and even given pocket money (10 shillings after deductions). I enjoyed my army life just as I had enjoyed the Indefatigable. However, it was time to move on. Went to Canada. Have done many things but the most enjoyable time was spent at the University of Toronto where I did my undergraduate and post graduate studies. As a result I became a teacher and spent perhaps the most enjoyable time of my life with young people. I am convinced that time spent on the Indie not only toughens people but teaches them to think more quickly in order to be able to survive in a very tough situation. Having said that I must also if I am honest also say that I saw boys who were ill prepared for life at the Indie and should never have been sent there. They were thank goodness few and far between and I hope that life for most graduates of the Indie has been as good for them as it has been for me.
