Subject: All-flavoured Spike!

Hmmm... no one's really talking. So I thought, why not start off about Spike. Cause, you know, what with all the SpikeHo's around...
Anyway, I was thinking about Career Changes, byt Two Ladies of Quality, and I realised, Spike seems to go with everything. I mean, I made an add-hoc list of the parings I've read and enjoyed, and I came up with -
Spike/Buffy - spuffy, yadda yadda, my favourite is still Elizabeth's eerie Achille's Heel. But yeah, this couple has given me more than my fair share of jollies
Spike/Willow - Apart from the rash of Willow Sues, there's Jonquil's scrumptious In The Company of Wolves. I had a real soft spot for this pair until I fell in love with Tara.
Spike/Angel - mmmm. the couple that got me converted from an 'eew gross' to a 'slash, mmmm'. Ducks' hilarious parodies come to mind, and also Kita's darker pieces.
Spike/Giles - Career Changes is reallypulling me in, but there was this disturbing fic where Dru and Spike kidnap Giles that I still remember,in a good way. plus - two british guys, never a bad thing.
Spike/Xander - Saber Shadowkitten coaxed me into this one. She writes the weirdest things in the funniest ways. Plus, Xander's homo undercurrents are almost cannon..
Spike/Dru - The original pair that started the shipping. I've read some lovely creepy little noir things, but nothing comes immediatly to mind.
Spike/Faith - A great pairing, its worked well in Vatrixsta's stories, and I read a great dark piece where Spike turns her, and then they head off to LA.
Spike/Tara - I totally adored this pair the minute I read Miranda's incredible Quiet as a Mouse.
Spike/Dawn - Yes I have read some, and no, it doesn't ick me. Done the right way, like in Trixie Firecracker's Camelot, its got great potential. Now Jame's song is what is creepy...
Spike/Cordelia - I read one really cool story where he kidnaps her in LA, and it takes off from there, and I started hunting for more. The really have a great snark potential.
Spike/Anya - Anya, how do I love thee... I haven't actually read any fics with this pairing (help me out someone) but I would love to, because I think they are perfect for each other in a totally misfitted way.
Spike/Joyce - bleagh. not something i would wilingly read agin, but it didn't really ick me much.
That's as far as my ick factor goes, but I havent come across any other pairings that I can remember... oh, yes, apart from some rather luscious Spike/Penn stuff.

So, this guy really seems to be versetile, huh?
Anyone else get a pairing I missed, do jump in.

Spike/Tara -- Check out "Soft" if you haven't read it, even though it isn't finished, and there's also one (should be in the bookmarks because I rec'd it, which is just Spike and Tara talking in a bar about how Buffy is abusive to Spike. Can't remember the name of course, I'm so useful.)

Spike/Anya -- I'd love to see some of those too. I just ran across an old publicity photo of Spike and Anya together and wondered if the writers once had something in mind for them (remember the scene from that horrible Buffy/Riley sex episode whose name I have deliberately blotted from my memory) and then gave it up as a bad job.

Do you notice what's specifically missing from this list? Something that is an actual pairing, and that tends to disprove the Spike/Cement Block theory (in which Spike has chemistry with everything, including a cement block)? Spike/Harmony!!!! They just have no chemistry at all, but they're really FUN together, so why isn't anyone writing fics about them?

[> [> What about the Spike/door pair? -- DeepaD, 12:25:37 06/13/02 Thu

in dead things, i think he had a really good love scene with that door... all that carressing!
Yeah, i read soft, but somehow it didnt get to me. Dunno why. I liked the fic you'd recced as well. As for Spike/harmony, what about our prodigal Yahtzee's in Harm's Way? Not quite shippy, but... sigh. yeah. there's lack of good Sparmony. Also Spanya.

Hey, thought I'd butt in on your conversation with some of my own picks, and to point out some, in case you missed them.

>Spike/Willow - Apart from the rash of Willow Sues,

By the way, do you know if she's still writting the sequel? I e-mailed her, but she hasn't written me back yet.

>Spike/Dru - The original pair that started the
>shipping. I've read some lovely creepy little noir
>things, but nothing comes immediatly to mind.

Have you read Zero's The Brighter, Cold Moon? That's the absolute best Spike/Dru story I've ever read. If you haven't, here's the addy to some of Zero's (wonderful) stories.

>Spike/Cordelia - I read one really cool story where he

This may be the same story you're thinking about, but this one, Spike and Cordelia both get kidnapped. It's called With The Lights Off, It's Less Dangerous. It's a great story. If it's not the same, here's the addy.

I read one focused on just the two of them, but not in a relationship way. I can't remember where it was, but if you're interested, let me know, and I'll try to find it. It may even have been rec'ed on our list.

And one of my favorite stories, regardless of pairings, is Beats A Cruel December. If you haven't read it, read NOW NOW NOW.

http://geocities.com/ymmv3/december.html

Well, that took me forever, finding all those addresses. Please let me know if you've read all of them or not.

Is it "A Couple of Ex-demons Just Sitting Around Talking",
By Kalima? If so it's at ff.net and

http://www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/kalima/exdemons.html

As for other possible Spike pairings, I was flabbergasted that Rune's "Fuck You and Your Cat" works so well. Spike/Lorne!

http://www.my-immortal-beloved.co.uk/fuandyourcat.html

And I once read a highly unlikely Spike/Parker fic. Must have been done as a stunt, much like the Spike/Riley fic I've read.

That's the one! That would've bothered me all night if you hadn't mentioned it.

How about this one, for Spike/Other: My Spoon Will Go On by Jonquil. funny

Thank you Indri! That was hilarious, and you have most certainly added to the delicious spike flavours! Can you please rec this gem of a story to the list...
Kalima's of course, I've read, and as for riley/spike, well, i think there the fault lies more with riley's flavourlessness than with our blonde nummy treat.

Hey Jen - whatever gave you the idea that this was butting in? its supposed to be free-for-all over here, only my big mouth and everyone else's disgusted silence has prevented that!
OK, now linearly down your list -
Jonquil, sigh. I wish I knew. I've stopped by her blog a few times, but she hasn't mentioned anything. Do let me know if you hear from her, because I'm dying to read that sequel.
Zero. of course. i'd read her entire site a long time back when i first found it, cause she's gorgeous. I hadn't remembered moon when i saw your link, but i just went over and checked it out, and yup. remember it. great little story.
With the lights Off, no, its not the one i as talking about (that one's darker) but yeah, its a nice story. I think i have it saved in my hard drive.
And beats a cruel december - wow. i had not read that, and if it isn't in the recs, which i suspect it isn't, i strongly urge you to mail the list and rec it. i'll happily second it. And it just bears out my point about that pairing, doesn't it?
thanks so much for all that link-hunting. I can understand how tedious it is! My salutations!

I asked her about it about a year ago... she said i shouldn't hold my breath, as she was concentrating on other things :) damn!

BTW - there are a few other very good S/W fics in the bookmarks, you should look for them, their worth it. off the top of my head: "Pet" and "Dust" (and everything by Bluebelle).

They wrote two sequels to that, as well... Let me find the link... Ok, link's dead, but the whole series is at Enthrall, a whole Spike/Cordelia *archive*!! I had a request for it yesterday, so I did a little searching...

http://passion.supervixen.nu/allfanfic.html

Apparently, it has about eighty fics where the two are involved.

Woo-hoo!

Spuffy's really my thing, but for S/D try the futurefic "Along Came a Spider" by Elizabeth - lovely, painful and perfect. http://www.ficorama.net/spider.htm

>I realised, Spike seems to go with everything.

I think also that part of the appeal is that there are many plausible versions of Spike. He's a sufficiently complicated character that an author can pick out just a couple of traits and run with them. He's All-Purpose Spike as well as All-Flavoured.

Consider some versions. There's:

Thoroughly Evil Spike, for those moments when your least favorite Buffyverse characters need to be kidnapped or killed.

The Big Bad, who only thinks he's Thoroughly Evil Spike but in fact couldn't hatch a plan to escape from a paper bag. Usually comic relief.

Drunken Spike (aka LovelornSpike)for pathos, comic relief and occasional bath scenes.

Plot Thickener Spike, who may be any of the other versions of Spike as well, but who will set some plot aspect into motion just because he is bored.

Medical Experiment Spike aka Caged Panther Spike, for all your metaphorical needs about man, nature and different kinds of evil.

Unlikely Romantic Hero Spike for your favourite Spuffyfics.

The Spike You Could Take Home to Mother, because no-one else is asking Joyce for her opinion.

Big Brother Spike, because no-one else is asking Dawn for her opinion.

Stalker Spike, who can be either quite evil, comic relief or an excuse for a sex scene.

Rebellious Abused Child Spike (aka Will), who appears in many Fanged Four fics, costarring Angelus as the evil dad, Darla as an uncaring mum and Drusilla as the adored and incestuous sister.

Abused Spouse Spike

Abusing Spouse Spike, including all Spike/Harmony fic.
Unstoppable Sex Machine Spike

Spike Through History, who wanders through Great Moments of the Twentieth Century like some evil incarnation of Dr Who, hanging out in Prohibition bars and chatting up John Lennon. Sometimes accompanied by his beautiful assistant, Drusilla, but more often than not she's been chained to a bedpost so that Unstoppable Sex Machine Spike can have his way with the locals.

Spike the Speaker of Home Truths aka Dr Ruth Spike
Spike the Wit---he'll even insult Goddesses from the Bitch Dimension for you.

Spike the Author of Godawful Poetry

Spike the Complete Jerk, for those moments when Angel really needs to lose his temper.

Existential Angst Spike, who _does not brood_ but it looks awfully like it.

Redemptionista Spike, because if he can be saved, there's hope for us all.
The Wrong Boyfriend Spike, who rides on his motorcycle wearing too much leather. Shouldn't you be dating that nice grad student instead?

The Englishman Abroad Spike, who will mock the US, munch on his Weetabix and use words like "bint".

Odd Couple Spike, one half of any comedy duo.

Try Hard Spike, who through his (sometimes) selfless and unrewarded actions becomes a metaphor for someone from the wrong side of the tracks trying to make good. Also useful if you want to demonstrate that Person X/Y/Z is an uncaring bitch/bastard who doesn't deserve Try Hard Spike's assistance and/or affection.

And my least favorite version to date, Sir Spike, who owns a castle in England and is very rich because all British people are like that, don't you know?

Well, that's turned into quite a lengthy list, hasn't it? And I'm sure there are more. Football Fan Spike? Will there be post-Cup fics in which Spike chats up David Beckham? He did say he was a fan of Man United...

God, Indri, that was hilarious!
He comes in all flavours, he's more versatile than a Swiss army knife, and i hear he only comes in an extra-large size…
I think our catalogue will be a sell-out, don't you?
A few more models -
Spike the sensitive bedwarmer - will comfort you through all those nightmares because, god knows, everyone has nightmares that leave them trembling.

Spike the thermostat - cool as ice against your back in a deliciously wicked way, and then burning heat as he, erm, you know.

Spike the great bisexualiser – guaranteed to turn even the most shrinking lesbian into a wanton hetero sex slut, and convert the most homophobic male into an inveterate slasher.

Spike the brit slang dictionary – for all those words for homosexuals and balls that you never wanted to know
And lets not even get into the adults only models…

Ok, I’d like my Spikebot with batteries included, please.

There's also:

Male Bonding Spike, available for showcasing friendly demons or occasional moments of reluctant camaraderie with Xander

Linguistic Spike (handy for those travel fics or introducing new demon species) -- presumably based on his knowing Fyarl and not on "debasing the beef canoe"

and my personal unfavorite:
Domestic Spike, who has no correlation on the show that I'm aware of (unless you really want to stretch implied bartending abilities) but nevertheless shows up in many fics wearing an apron and cooking

I like Domestic Spike. A man who can cook is always an asset. So is a man who's not afraid to wear an apron. But I can never work out when Spike might have learnt this skill--certainly not when he was alive. Spike only eats junk food and I don't remember Dru eating anything other than people. He wouldn't have cooked for Harmony. Is he taking culinary night classes on the sly?

I'm afraid I thought of a few more Spikes at work today. I'll list them now and then I'll stop, I promise. There's:

Abandoned Childe Spike

Shotgun Wedding Spike, who has had to fix his hair and get a real job because there's a Little Bad on the way and now he has to help pay for its upkeep and the wedding.

John Constantine Spike, named after the long-coated, blond Londoner of the Hellblazer comics who wanders the mean streets, investigating dark magic, reeking of cigarette smoke and moral ambiguity.

I wrote a Spike/Anya that is set after "Where the Wild Things Are," the episode where they had their big bonding moment in the Bronze.

Anyway, it's called "Nothing to Prove" and it's on my site:

I posted too soon, should have added also that I have written several other Spike pairings -- Spike/Xander, Spike/Faith, and Spike/Giles. Spike really IS the all-purpose slash character! I love writing him, he is so complex and versatile.

Spike/Lindsey is such a great idea, thanks to whomever came up with that -- I love Lindsey too, so I shall have to give that a try! As soon as I can come up with something resembling a plot......
