But at least the movement won't end in bloodshed and it would become a more difficult task for the government to smash the whole movement in one night. You really think the government wanted to fire their bullets in front of the satellite cameras? It wasn't until the leaders felt their personal safety was in danger that they chose to act. But what if they retreated temporarily?

Certainly inside the government there are people who give sympathy to the students, they knew that they should listen to the student's voices right from the beginning. But the leaders didn't listen and so it turnt out to be a disaster. This could actually give the government a chance to re-orient their directions and policies and they might have come to an agreement that would benefit both sides. But the students gave them no choice but to use force. Afterall the leaders are dictators

And how do revolutionary movements turn out to be radical? Usually because that the leaders are also radical, just like how Hitler could turn the Germans into extremists and the Comunists mastery in this kind of art not needed to be said of. I don't agree that no one could stay rational is an excuse for them. Otherwise the future of humanity is really depressing.
