Subject: Another Finale question. . .Inside
In reply to: ~~ 's message, "season ten, series finale: Fair Winds and Following Seas, April 29, 2005" on 15:23:11 04/28/05 Thu

There's been something that has bothered me ever since I saw the Finale.

I'm wondering if you all think it's realistic for Harm to say he loves her "but" he doesn't want to give up his career to be with her, and she doesn't want to give up hers to be with him. I know those weren't his exact words, but even Mac took it that way, as she asked if that put them right back where they started.

Mac confirmed that one of them has to give it up, if they get married. That's established, but is it realistic to have them both unwilling to give up their careers to be together? Before I saw it, I couldn't imagine either of them saying they wouldn't be willing to do so. That scene, while it makes my heart swell at seeing them that way, seemed like it didn't match with the ending scenes in McMurphy's. Where they both looked so willing to give up either of their careers to be together. I think the scene would have made much more sense if Harm had said, "I love you Mac, but I don't want you to have to sacrifice your career for me." And Mac respond, "And I don't want you to sacrifice yours for me either, you've done it once before. It's my turn." And they would argue over the merits of both of them giving it up. (San Diego's better for Mattie, closer to family etc. London would mean that Harm could accept his promotion and take a higher paying job. Yada Yada.) And not being able to agree, they'd fall back on the coin toss.

Both have given up their careers for love before. I just don't see them talking about marrying each other, and finally being on the same page, and then saying they don't want to give up their careers. It just didn't make sense considering how happy they were, and willing to let a coin toss decide where they went.

What do you think?
