Subject: Harm's words in the finale. . .Inside
In reply to: ~~ 's message, "season ten, series finale: Fair Winds and Following Seas, April 29, 2005" on 15:23:11 04/28/05 Thu

I was just watching the tail end of the finale again, on my break at work, and I was struck by something intersting. When they were talking about the coin toss, Harm didn't say anything about regulations or finding posts that would fit well with getting married. They didn't toss a coin to determine who would give up the promotion to find another position that's close to where the other is going to be.

He said, "For this marriage to be *successful* one of us has to resign our commission." That's what was also referred to as the "500 Pound Gorilla". They both knew one of them would have to give up the military completely if they got married.

Knowing Harm and Mac as we do, why do you think that one of them would have to resign to make their marriage "successful"? At first I thought it was the competition issue, but if they are in different offices that wouldn't factor in as much. I'm curious what you all think about that.

This also brings home to me how much the Navy *isn't* Harm's whole life. So many people say they can't see him doing anything else, or he wouldn't be happy doing anything else. And maybe that would be difficult to picture, but from Harm's point of view, he was willing to give up his career to make his marriage to Mac *successful*. When he talked to Mattie about the promotion, he told her he's "not going anywhere without her".

If his promotion would have gotten in the way of him having Mattie with him, I believe he would have resigned for her as well. Family comes first with Harm, not the Navy. It isn't all he has. He's been willing to give it up for Sergei, for Mac (twice), and I believe he would have given it up for Mattie in a heartbeat.

We've all talked before about Harm being good at whatever he does. I believe that if his family is happy, he doesn't need to be in the Navy, he would be happy doing any other job that suited him.
