Melanie walked Princess around the arena, bending to the inside and the outside easily. Then they picked up a collected sitting trot, moving as one. As they passed the corner marker Mel started posting, pushing Princess to a working trot. Then Melanie exaggerated her posting and shortened the reins, pressing with her heels. Princess lengthened into a beautiful extended trot, fluid strides and a wonderful leg action. Melanie sat deep and brought her outside leg back, asking for a canter. They cantered circles, half circles, figure eights, and serpentines. Princess responded willingly with smooth strides. On the other side of the arena Spice was behaving like a gentleman for Stephanie. "Ok, c'mere!" Jenny called. Both girls walked their Arabs over and halted. "Today we're going to work mainly on flying lead changes and transitions." She nodded at Melanie. "You first. Pick up a collected canter down the arena and switch leads at K." Melanie turned Princess and squeezed. The 14.3 mare burst into a canter. "How was that transition?" Mel joked. She sat deep, moving rythmetically with the mare's light strides. Her shoulders were back, back straight, hips swinging, hands soft and giving, and heels down. Melanie brought her leg back and squeezed. Princess responded with a lead change. They practiced flying lead changes easily. Then they did walk-trot, trot-canter, canter-trot, cantrer-walk, trot-halt, canter-halt transitions. Princess had perfected her canter-halt transitions by the end of the traning session. Spice was also more supple and responsive to Steph's slightest cues.
