Susan watched Jon and Cassidy tack up for their lesson. Jon was riding Montana, his blue roan QH gelding Cassidy was riding Lauren's horse, Western Appeal. The buckskin QH mare, was standing calmly in crossties while Cassidy put on her tack. Jon looked up from buckling Montana's bridle and said, "You up for this lesson?" Cassidy thought for a second about just how fast barrel racing was, she just had the western basics down so far. "Sure, it's going to be fun on Appeal." she replied. Jon grinned and strapped on his helmet. "C'mon we're going to be late." he stated. Cassidy buckled her helmet and they led their horses out to the ring. Cassidy vaulted into the saddle and Jon did the same. They began their warm up. Appeal was not as frisky as usual and was behaving well for Cassidy, who was still adjusting to the new saddle. Susan viewed both riders with a critical eye. Cassidy was doing well, and Jon was handling Montana perfectly. After they were done warming up, Susan walked into the ring and hd them walk a large circle around her while she told them what to do. "Okay, Jon you will go first. Run the barrels the best you can. Remember Montana is still pretty green and may try to take the turns too wide. Cassidy, I will tell you what Jon is doing right and wrong so that you will know what to do next time." Jon went to the starting point and when Susan shouted "GO!", he took off at a speedy gallop. Susan pointed out how Jon pushed him foward, made him take his turns quickly and cleanly, and kept him on the pattern. They did the clover leaf pattern quicker than they ever had before! Susan patted Montana's neck, after Jon slowed him down. Cassidy smiled at him. "Good job." she said. Susan looked at Cassidy. "Do you still want to give it a try?"
