In reply to: Susan 's message, "Barrel Racing Lesson with Jon and Cassidy!" on 17:36:38 06/17/02 Mon

Western Appeal chewed the bit eagerly and eyed the 3 barrels. "Um, ok." Cassidy straightened in the saddle, shoving her heels down and sinking into the western saddle. She grabbed the reins firmly and pressed her heels against the Quarter horse's sides. Appeal burst into a quick trot. (jog, whatever...) They did a circle and then Susan yelled, "GO!" Appeal surged into a canter, then a gallop. Cassidy hung on for dear life as the mare swerved around the barrels. Appeal was an expert, and so she was doing all the work while Cassidy basically just clung to the saddle horn. Jon and Susan stiffled their giggles as Appeal slid smoothly around the last barrel and bolted back. Cassidy gasped as the mare dug in and stopped aburptly...reining style. Cassidy let out a shaky breath and ruffled the black mane. "G-g-good girl," she said weakly. "Cassidy," Susan said practically. "You know what just happened?" "Yes," Cassidy admitted. "I was a passenger...she ran the barrels expertly but I wasn't riding her..I was just hanging on. Can we try it again?" Susan was impressed. *oh, p.s., they should have done poles first, then cantered the barrels, not immediatly sent Cass forwards!*
"Go ahead. Keep it slow and steady, don't go a break-neck speeding gallop again! Gather up the reins, shift your weight in the saddle and lean all your weight into the inside stirrup and press with our outside leg. If you slip, grab the horn and shift back. Keep her head turned all the way in." Cassidy nudged Appeal and the buckskin mare picked up a rolling lope. They headed for the 1st barrel and Cassidy concentrated hard. She shifted her weight to the inside and swung the mare around successfully. Jon whistled and clapped. Grinning, Cassidy nudged Appeal around the last 2 barrels, getting the hang of it! "Much better," Susan praised. They practiced some more and then put the horses up.
