Date Posted: 17:52:03 06/17/02 Mon Alli walked up the barn aisle and grabbed a lead rope. She walked out to the field and got her fleabitten gray arabian filly, Feather. She opened the paddock gate and the mare thundered over, followed by Delilah, her mom's palomino morgan. Alli clipped the lead shank onto Feather's halter and led the mare into the barn. Alli began to brush Feather's silky coat. Jon walked into the barn with his blue roan QH colt, Montana. Jon hooked him up in crossties and began to brush him. Alli was finished tacking up. "Jon, I'm heading out to the arena to warm up. Mom is going to have us work on the under saddle classes for Saddle's show." Alli called, before leading Feather out to the ring. Alli mounted and asked for a walk. The pretty mare stepped nicely out and smoothly started around the ring. After warming up at a walk, Alli squeezed her legs. Feather sprung foward airily, her stride smooth and steady. Jon walked out of the barn and swung into the saddle. He walked Montana once each way as walk warm up, before asking for a trot. Montana responded with a fast trot, his long, reachy strides pushing him over the ground. Just then, Susan walked out of the barn. She called, "Alright, halt. We are going to try this one at a time." she said, "Alli, you go first, beacause Feather is older and more experienced. I want you to walk." Alli asked for a walk. Feather moved easily foward. Then Susan said, "Trot!" Feather moved into a smooth steady trot. Alli controlled to just the right degree. Feather looked like she was skimming on air. “Canter!” Susan said, watching her skilled daughter ride. Alli sat trot, and squeezed her outside leg. Feather flew forward. She had an elegant canter that was perfect for dressage. Susan then called calmly, “Walk.” The lovely pair slowed. “Excellent, you should do very well in the growing and training show. Alright, you can go out to the jumping field and take her over an easy course, NO higher than 2’-6”.” Susan said. Alli and Feather rode over to the jumping arena. Susan turned to Jon, “Are you ready?” she asked. Jon nodded. “Walk.” Susan said. Jon squeezed and Montana just stood there. Jon nudged a bit firmer and Montana moved into a steady, comfortable walk. Jon firmly kept the QH colt moving, and ready to go. “Trot.” Jon responded to Susan’s command with a sharp squeeze. Montana jogged easily forward, his movement long and springy. Jon kept this up easily, sitting comfortably in his western saddle. “Canter!” Jon and Montana flew forward into Montana’s amazing canter. It was a fast rocking canter. “Halt.” Jon and Montana halted and Susan said, “Very good. Montana is still pretty green so I’m not expecting a first, but he should do well.” Just then Feather cantered over, with no Alli. Susan grabbed the mare’s reins, and checked her over for injuries, there were none. She handed Feather to Jon and ran over to the jumping arena. Alli was laying on the ground. Susan ran over to her. “Feather was being really stubborn and wouldn’t take that upright. I turned her around and she refused, almost rearing. I came off, and I don’t think I’m hurt, except for my pride.” Susan said, “Stand up. I’ll work with Feather tomorrow on jumping.” Alli got up and limped to the barn. Susan untacked Feather and Jon untacked Montana. They turned them out in the paddock and drove a sore Alli home. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
