It was an unusually warm day for the end of winter. Melanie decided to give her mare a break from dressage and jumping schooling. "How about a nice trail ride?" she asked instead. Princess lazily nibbled her hair. Mel laughed and slid a bridle over her dished head. Then she pulled on her helmet, grabbed the reins, and vaulted on. Princess shifted her weight, startled, as Mel settled onto her bareback. She picked up the reins and clattered out of the barn. "Ah, I miss doing this. I haven't been riding bareback in ages!" Melanie exclaimed as she gripped with her knees and held the reins firmly. "I hope I don't fall off!" She giggled at the familiar thought. Princess had dumped her once and might try it again. She urged the mare into a gliding trot. Then, finding this a bit too bumpy for bareback, rolled into a light canter. They floated over the winding trail. This particular path was only a big loop in the woods which led back to the barn after about 25 minutes of riding. They splashed through a shallow stream and cantered back to the barn after a bit. Mel felt relaxed after the quiet ride with her mare. She dismounted and took off the bridle. After Princess was groomed and fed an apple, she turned her out with Goddess. "Thanks for being such a good girl," she cooed, kissing the soft muzzle. Princess nickered, then turned and trotted off to Goddess, her companion. The 2 Arab mares nuzzled in greeting, then settled down to graze side by side. How cute! And...Mel thought happily...no saddle to clean!
