Author: Anne Hilton
Subject: Looking for ancestors and the works of Janet Hamilton

As A child I was told that I was related to a famous poetess called Janet Hamilton - I have tried many ways to find out more about her and to secure her works - I would also like to know if there is family that I could make contact with in Motherwell

All I know is that my grandmother was from Motherwell and she married a William Hilton (or Hamilton - Hilton) and that they had one son before immigrating to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in the early 20th century, where my father was born.

I think that Janet Hamilton was the sister of my fathers grandmother

If anyone can help I would be most grateful - Anne Hilton

>Janet Hamilton was born Janet Thomson in the village of Corshill, parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire on October 12th, 1795. She was a descendant of the Covenanter John Whitelaw on her mother's side. At 14 years of age she was married to John Hamilton, a young man who worked with her father in the shoe making trade. She was fifty years of age before she learned to write although she had taught herself to read when only young. Her move towards poetic composition di not start until she was ff years old. In 1863 she published Poems and Songs; in 1865 she published Poems and Sketches; three years later she published Poems and Ballads. She died on October 27th, 1873 by which time she was poor, old , and blind.

My grandmother, born in 1896 Elizabeth Wallace took my Father to the Memorial fountain in Coatbridge to remember her ?great aunt - I haven't delved too deeply at present, as I've just discovered her works. My Grandmother spent a lifetime trying to find out about her poetry, but failed. -the wonders of the internet! The name "Hamilton" has been passed down through the family and I was born and raised in the South East of Glasgow. I was born in Bellshill Maternity Hospital, not far from the home of Janet Hamilton in Coatbridge.
I'm hoping my father has more information.

I am related to Janet Hamilton, through my father's Motherwell, Lanarkshire family, and she is my great-great great(I think!) grandmother. I have one book of her collected works handed down through the family, and would love to learn more. There are Hiltons also in the family tree, and there have been South African (Durban) connections, so I would be interested to get in touch with Anne Hilton.

Hello there.

I too am related to Janet Hamilton - on my mother's side - she was my great, great, great, great, great grandmother. We have in our family a couple of books she had published and also a family bible containing one of her eye patches.

I would be interested in finding out about your family and also letting you know about my side of the family tree.

I have been researching the life of Janet Hamilton, and may be able to share information with you. I have the names and dates of birth of her children and a couple grandchildren, and census records for her family. Her great-granddaughter is still alive, living in the outskirts of Glasgow; I could give you her address. She is I think descended from a daughter Mary. Janet had a son named William, and the family believed he had emigrated to Australia, but perhaps he was your ancestor. Please respond to my e-mail address and I will correspond. I am in the process of working up a project to celebrate and promote the writings of Janet Hamilton, whose memorial is located in West End Park, Coatbridge. This is part of a parks based heritage and arts project which will have its focus within the park and involve the surrounding communities. I would love to involve her descendants in any way possible in the process. At present I'm researching possibilities as to how we can progress this so you would be able to be involved from the outset should you wish (or at least be kept up to date with developments should time or distance not allow greater involvement). I can be contacted on macphails@northlan.gov.uk I would be really pleased to hear from you.

I too am descended from Janet Hamilton, and have worked out some family tree stuff which I'm sure the original poster Anne Hilton will be interested in.
Can Anne please get in touch with me directly through Voy?

I am also trying to research Janet Hamilton the poet.

All the online articles I see about her refer to her being 5th in descent from John Whitelaw “the monk lands martyr” - who I believe I’m descended from.

I am trying to find the family tree down from John Whitelaw to Janet Hamilton but can’t find it anywhere. Has anyone found this link?
