Galafilm's ``The Worst Witch'' Sweeps Into Montreal for Production of Third TV Season

Fourteen New Episodes Being Filmed of Popular TV Series Produced By
Montreal's Galafilm Inc. And Partners To Air on YTV , SRC and TFO in
Canada and ITV in the U.K.

Series Also Airs on HBO in the U.S.

MONTREAL, July 4 /CNW/ - The popular, live-action television comedy
adventure series, The Worst Witch, began production of its third season in
Montreal last week. Later this month the series will move to Twickenham
Studios, England to resume filming the season's thirteen new half-hour
episodes and a fourteenth, half-hour ``Christmas Special'' episode of the
series, bringing the total number of episodes of the series produced to date
to forty.
The Worst Witch airs in Canada in English on YTV and in French on Societé
Radio-Canada in Quebec and on TFO in Ontario, on HTV in the United Kingdom,
and on HBO in the United States.
The Worst Witch, stars Canadian actress Claire Coulter (Foolish Heart,
Emily of New Moon, and Royal Court Theatre) as `Miss Cackle', along with
British actors Georgina Sherrington, recent surprise winner of Hollywood's
prestigious `Young Artist Award' by beating out better-known actors Natalie
Portman and Christina Ricci, with her role on The Worst Witch as `Mildred
Hubble', and Kate Duchêne (Royal Shakespeare Company) as `Miss Hardbroom'.
The television series is based on the internationally bestselling ``Worst
Witch'' books by Jill Murphy. J.K. Rowling, author of the phenomenally
successful `Harry Potter' books, has credited Murphy's ``Worst Witch'' books
as being an inspiration for her own best-selling series.
The Worst Witch chronicles the adventures of hapless trainee witch,
Mildred Hubble, as she pursues her spooky studies at Miss Cackle's Academy for
Witches. Although Miss Cackle's Academy appears to be a traditional academy -
a boarding school emphasizing tradition, discipline and values - the academy
also teaches students how to cast spells, ride broomsticks, chant and mix
potions.
The anti-heroine of the series, Mildred Hubble, a walking and flying
disaster area who, this season, is entering her third year at Miss Cackle's
Academy, is know as ``the'' worst witch in the school. She can't ride her
broomstick without crashing, her spells always go spectacularly wrong and
she's even afraid of the dark. Yet Mildred is the one who has all the
adventures.
``This year we're building on the success of our first two seasons of The
Worst Witch,'' said executive producer Arnie Gelbart of Galafilm Inc. ``And we
can promise that there will be lots more magic, comedy and adventure from the
students and staff at Miss Cackles Academy.''
Based on her own experiences of boarding school, Jill Murphy's stories
are a magical send-up of school life, where chemistry class is a magic potion
lab, choir practice a place for chanting spells and broomsticks are ridden
instead of bicycles. First published in 1974, ``The Worst Witch'' and its
sequels have been on children's best-seller lists for over twenty years.
The new season of The Worst Witch will be premiere this Fall on YTV in
Canada and on ITV in the United Kingdom. HBO in the United States will
premiere season two of the series this Summer.
The Worst Witch is produced by Angela Beeching and Michael Haggiag.
Galafilm's Ian Whitehead is line producer. Executive producers are Michael
Haggiag for Global Arts, Arnie Gelbart for Galafilm and Dan Maddicott for
United. The series is adapted for television by Martin Riley.
The Worst Witch is an official UK-Canada co-production, produced by
Galafilm Inc. (Montréal), HTV/United, and Global Arts Productions (U.K.), with
the participation of the Canadian Television Fund created by the Canadian
government and the Canadian cable industry, Telefilm Canada: Equity Investment
Program, CTF: Licence Fee Program, in association with YTV, TFO/TVOntario,
Societé Radio-Canada, and the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit
administered by SODEC. The Worst Witch is distributed worldwide by ITEL.
