Going from taking regular, non-competitive classes to being on a dance team is a huge adjustment. In regular dance class, every one can do their own thing and put their own individual style into the steps that they are performing. However, when you're on a dance team, every single person has to look exactly the same. That's probably why you're getting so many corrections- not because you're not a good dancer, but because you need to learn how to dance in a group. Just remember that no one- and I mean no one- is perfect. There is no such thing as perfect technique or a dancer who has never made a mistake. You're not a failure unless you tell yourself you are. If you can't get a step down, all that means is that you're going to have to work at it until you have it down. As for things to calm you down before a performance, there are so many things that you can try. I personally like to listen to really soothing music (like Enya) the night before to calm me down. Other people like to stretch or meditate, etc. You have to see what works for you. Good luck with your classes and keep on dancing!
