You mention running and cycling -I've done a lot of cycling, especially as a teenager. I just did it for pleasure, always challenging myself and exploring. When you're on the bike for hours at a time you almost have to be aware of what you're eating, as a result of that I've gotten much more conscious of how I'm eating and how to eat healthy than I think I would be otherwise. I eat meat but I think carbos are often very underrated.
