Well, I am new here, and have just decided to shut off my TV a few days ago. I even "downgraded" my cable to just the basic service. I needed to be a cable customer to get the best rate on my cable modem (still need that :) ). The only channels I get are ones that are broadcast. I haven't watched anything at all yet, except DVD, VHS movies.

With movies, you are making the choice. You watch it when you want to, and no commercials. Many people I have read about even buy some "series" TV shows on DVD, like Startrek-Next Generation. I even found Mary Tyler Moore - First Season (A great, funny show). And again, no commercials. You set the times you want to watch.

What was happening to me was that I would sit in front of my TV and flip through channel after channel (68 of them with my cable box), not really watching anything in particular. I could waste a whole evening watching 5 minutes of different shows. I think the problem may be too many choices. We get confused and think we are going to "miss" something. There was a great article about how Americans have too many choices in Sunday's paper. Yes, I am reading the paper now! That is a step in the right direction for me!
