It's all about the almighty dollar. And if people weren't watching it, advertisers would not pay to advertise on it, and it would not get made.

Over the years I've become less critical of the people who create the garbage and focused more on those that consume it. For example: I don't hate Jerry Springer the personality, and I'm happy for his success - if that's what he wanted (he has to live with it, not me) But what really disturbs me is the huge following that keeps his show winning in the ratings whenever and wherever it is shown. THAT is the commentary on the sorry condition of mankind.

As far as violent programming, if the majority of consumers didn't lap it up like pigs at the trough it would never get made. What is wrong with our fellow travellers, that this is what passes for entertainment? The arguement always gets made that even Shakespeare had violence in his plays, but those were always small plot devices, not the entire plot itself! Old Willie was writing about the human condition, and the human condition has contained its share of violence. But it also contained slavery, misogyny. We can, as a species, evolve and rise above our past. We were endowed with certain gifts by the creator that put us in a different category from the life forms that operate purely and simply from instinct. We have been blessed with reason, and creativity, and there is no reason to continue to be ruled by our instinctual impulses.

And while we are on the subject of TV fostering violence, I have to timidly put forth for discussion the fact that our governments (all of them) also teach the young and impressionable that the way to deal with life is mostly through violence. It has long been a personal belief that leaders, if they truly deserved that classification, would endeavor to show us all a better way. But then I've always been called a "dreamer", and in the most derisive tones.
