I also (in the last couple of years) have used some video courses for my middle daughter. These work well but you have to stay on top of it AND make sure your child is participating. You still have to grade everything and answer any questions your child has, etc. but you don't have to TEACH it. It has worked well when I've used it for my middle daughter but I don't believe will be something I can use for my youngest or for Child O Mine. It's not for everyone. A Beka is great at teaching reading. My oldest two attended private schools that used Abeka, and have learned to read well, as a result. They attended during Pre-K thru 2nd grade. We moved after that, and they are now in public school, and doing well.

Currently, our public school is using Saxon Math in addition to Scott Forseman math(state approved). The PTO purchases it, and it seems to be working. The kids are learning the math concepts.

seem to generally like Saxon (its recommended in "The Well-Trained Child" - especially in the elementary boards... The highschool boards are generally a little more divided, at the moment they all really like this one series that you can get dvd's with (which is quite natural of a "want" when getting to higher level math, LOL)

I've heard good things about Saxon, but have not used it personally. We are switching from A Beka math this year to Bob Jones. A Beka is a GREAT curriculum but it tends to beat a dead horse so to speak. It makes for a very long school day and after teaching a concept goes a bit too much into what I would call "busy work." On the other hand, when they DO move on, the kids are SOLID on what they've learned (so am I! LOL!) As far as reading... I've been doing this for 9 years now and I would not use any other program to teach phonics/reading. IMO A Beka is the BEST in this catagory. Also their English (and mostly their curriculum across the board) is advanced compared to other curriculums I've looked at. If your kid can make it thru A Beka, they can make it thru ANYTHING. My middle child is going into 8th grade this year. She is a grade ahead for her age. She has consitently scored well above average and post high school the last 2 years (acording to "Standford 10" testing.) I think it's because of the A Beka curriculum we've followed all these years. Still, the work load is HEAVY w/ these folks even w/ me paring it down. Also their prices (which have always been high) are getting down right rediculous.

Oh.. and yes. LOL! I used the math DVD's the last 2 years for her. Otherwise I'd be hanging from a rafter somewhere!
