Subject: Problem with lunging, HELP!

Im a new horse owner, my wife has had a gelding QH mix for a couple years now. I have had Smokey since the Fourth Of July. He is a full blooded QH, 8 yr. old gelding. I have been trying to work him on a lunge line in the pasture. Im using a buggy whip, with no contact to him at all. I stand quarted from him, with the line in my left hand and him being about 5 feet away, and the buggy whip in my right hand. I try and snap the whip behind him and he just turns into me and stands. I tried his oppisote side and he does the same thing. So I just walked him and turned in circles for about 35 minutes and tried it again. SAME THING!!! What am I doing wrong?? Im sure that he knows what to do, but I must be sending the wrong message. Thanks for your input.
