Well, this summer at the barn i board at a lot of the horses swelled up b/c we went from Ok hay to pretty rich hay which caused the lymphatic vessels in the legs to swell, and fluids to back up into the lymphatic tissues (which causes swelling)b/c they had no where else to go. Do you know what the horse was getting before you got him. Some of these horses also went lame. I hate buting horses w/o knowing what your buteing for, but if you can't get a vet out i guess that's what i would try if you have some or can get a hold of some. It will help take care of any inflammation, to try and prevent some secondary complications. Is the horse getting exercise or moving around out in pasture? I don't want to scare you or anything b/c the chances of it going this far is pretty slim to none, but if the swelling gets too bad, and the circulation gets cut off and or hindered to his hooves there is the slight possibility that he could founder. But as long as he hasn't before it's a pretty slim possiblity. I guess i would give him 1 gr of bute 2x (if he weights about 1000 pounds)daily and see what happens. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.
