• I teared up a bit when Jamie, after his brief interlude with Willie, thought about Claire and her son...Jamie's first son. It jarred me a little, because of course we know about Bree -- daughter not son. But then immediately I remembered the timing of this, and that's what made me tear up: his loneliness and longing for Claire, how much he missed her and their child, and just the fact that HE DIDN'T KNOW about them...whether they were safe, etc. (NT) -- Nifty, 13:10:58 03/25/11 Fri

  • SP seems to be getting into a lot of stuff that Diana let go of through Voyager and on but there were hints dropped in the other LJ books (an Irish goose, now they're going to Ireland). And there were a few 'sort of' hints in Echo that Jamie has not ended his Jacobean contacts after all. Jamie was pretty adamant that he wanted nothing more to do with BPC or the Jacobities, but what we've seen so far suggests otherwise. • It's the US trade-paperback edition of ECHO (the larger size paperback) and it was just released on June 22. This is the ONLY place where the 8-page EXILE excerpt is available. • William's concern seems to be that he is a bastard. Remember how upset he was when Jamie called him that (in Voyager, when William spooked the horses and Jamie wasn't "fond of you either, ye little bastard" William was very upset, shrieking "take it back") Perhaps William isn't really surprised to learn that Ellesmere was not his father.   • I think that there's greater stigma attached to bastardy in Jamie/Willie's time than there is in Bree's time. Jamie confessed to Claire that he was ashamed that his father (Brian) was a bastard. And he was FURIOUS with Bree that she'd consider having a child without first being married. I think that it has -- in Jamie and Willie's mind -- much to do with "honor"...as if their honor is somehow besmirched because of some accident of fate that was not of their doing.           • Well, J&C marriage was registered in Scotland, as well as Jamie's and Laoghaire's, probably they didn't request proof of 'unmarried' status prior to marrying. I don't know if there was any record of it J&C marriage in America, so maybe C&J just went ahead and did it.             • I think it was a lot easier to get married in those days when people were more bound by religious laws, I don't think you had to register your marriage with the government like now. When they asked if there is any impediment to the marriage, if you believed your spouse dead that was good enough. Plus you had to call 'bans' giving anyone 3 weeks to object - bans could be excused in some circumstances (like you're nobility and rich *G*).                 • No, you're right about the timeline, I only meant folk usually waited a number of years, I suppose there was an expectation of how long each trip should take and things went from there. I imagine re-marriages didn't normally happen so quickly (unless of course the bride is a rebel spy needing rescueing by the lord and friend *G*). I don't imagine the hubbys usually did return, but I think the 2nd marriage would be annulled. I don't think J hit LJ over the 'carnal knowledge' (think he would react emotionally not violently).   • This is true, Jayn. I think the timeline details at the end of ECHO were intentionally blurred, to enhance the discombobulation. I also recall Diana saying on CompuServe that when she 1st began writing the continuation of Jamie & John's scenes that she was surprised to find Ian involved. So if someone did in fact hurt Lord John, it might not have been Jamie that did it. I also read the excerpt with Jamie & John with a feeling that there's events in the middle between "Oh?   • It's the one from a few months back. I saw it on Diana's website. From recent talk on the Boards, I thought there were some new excerpts from the Graphic Novel. But, there are not. Speaking of such things, I wonder what is happening with the latest attempt to bring "Outlander" to the screen. The "Braveheart" screenwriter, Randall Wallace, is doing it. (Personally, this doesn't thrill me.) I wonder how that's going. After seeing "Angels In America" on HBO, I am now hoping for a mini-series. But, I'd love to see the epic spectacle on the big screen. • I think the Lord John bit was a small boo-boo of the sort that sneaks in every so often. On the last page of Chapter 63 of DOA, Claire is talking to Lord John after she and Jamie return from the Mohawk town where they left Ian. She says "Brianna says that Dr. Fentiman trephined your skull." Then asks if she can examine it because she's never seen a trepanation.
