Atlanta Book Fair 2007 oral reading by DG - see inside -- GiGi, 12:22:38 10/28/08 Tue

I did not go to Atlanta Book Fair 2007, nor do I know anyone who went, but I know some who know others who went. So Ladies – JUST FOR YOU – I pulled in some favors, twisted some arms and made some phone calls.

Jamie and Claire (who else came???) are at Lallybroch. Jamie is conversing with Jenny while he eats his oatmeal (is Claire right there then??). He asks how Laoghaire fares and Jenny says to “Go see for yourself”. When he is at her house he sees the young man who sits at her doorstep. Jamie knows Laog. goes by Mrs. Fraser and is damned if he’ll call her that but he eventually asks the man to get his mistress. When the man rises, Jamie see that he is crippled and thinks it’s just like Laog. to employ a crippled servant to shame him. Loag. comes and greets him. Now this has all been posted by DG herself somewhere.

THIS IS NEW: Laog makes a snide remark about that she sees that he brought his wife (it is some other term for Claire that she uses) in her fine silk dresses. In the course of their conversation, Jamie reveals (or maybe Laog tells him) that she had a sexual affair with a married man while she was still at Castle Leoch. Jamie mentions that XX was married and hopes Laog didn’t give him her maidenhead. She did, she tells him. I assume this was the man her Father wanted Collum to beat her for???? Or was it after Jamie and Claire married?????

In the course of their conversation it is revealed that Laoh’s squeeze is the crippled young man at her door. What I could get from these people is that Jamie actually asks Laog. “why him and not me” or something to that effect as to why he can satisfy you and I can’t. Laog tells him that you (Jamie) never needed me but that he does.

For some reason (no one revealed to me) Jamie and Laog get into it. They are at it and rolling on the floor and the young crippled man comes to her defense and Jamie accidentally hits him and then breaks it off.

When he is leaving – he throws the yearly payment at Laog. and as it hits the wall or door or whatever - it makes a “clunk” and Jamie thinks that it would have made a more impressive noise if he had brought coin.

I truly hope I have NOT mangled the facts of this Atlanta 2007 reading too much. I apologize if I have. But I pieced this together from no less than 7 sources, all who varied a little in their telling.

- Well how I interpret this - Jamie will feel guilty even thinking about stopping the yearly money - because NOW he is supporting ANOTHER mouth - the crippled man. - P.S - I had this awful sinking feeling that Laog's affair was with Ian Murray... I know, I know! He and Jenny are soulmates, but it was just a passing thought I had. I wondered why Jenny wouldn't finish revealing to Jamie who she caught Laog with (in the letter she wrote). Jenny and Ian were married when Laog was at Castle Leoch..... I know it's dumb *now*.     - You pieced the reading together very well. I was there (Diana told me she'll be back in '09). My memory says it was a shovel as they were taking a walk in the garden. I want to say the servant started the altercation in defense of Leghair & she grabbed up a shovel. I remember I visualized them in a flower garden & a potting shed. I posted my rendition of it at the time, but it's out of archives. (p.s. Atlanta Book Fair 2007, Diana read the excerpt from ECHO and asks Laoghaire "who??" and Loaghaire tells him "who" she's been mmphing and why he satisfies her and Jamie couldn't.         I won't hold my breath about her ever apologizing. This reminds me of the Jane Fonda/Bruce Dern/Jon Voigt situation in "Coming Home". Maybe Longhorns is a 'cripples' fetishist and is only just now discovering it! I'm just relieved it isn't Ian. Incidentally, Marsali drops a foreshadowing of a hint in one of the books when she mentions Laoghaire's interactions with various men in the Lallybroch vicinity and says, about Ian, "She liked him well enough."         I think this happens on board the ship where Marsali asks Claire how to enjoy sex without getting pregnant. She brings up the scene where she burst in upon J & C at Lallybroch, and comments that her mother flinched whenever Jamie touched her, and goes on to describe Laoghaire as telling her terrible things about a married woman's "duties". This was in "Voyager" in the Caribbean. Don't remember the chapter name. Marsali says something to the effect of "even if you are a no good whore", I need your advice. - Oh, this is good!! I love the historical parts of DG’s books. The Hale in this scene (I believe) is Nathan Hale that was captured by Robert Roger’s Rangers near a tavern and later hanged for spying.   - I do remember something being said about Mary marrying again, and I think it might have been Claire remembering Frank’s family tree….it seems to me that it was several years after BJR death. I don’t think it would have been the same guy she was supposed to marry in DIA. I do hope that Claire meets up with Mary again….and it’s going to be really cool to she Mary/Alex’s son.   - Oh, no, it doesn't give away the whole plot of the book! Not even remotely close, believe me! I'm deliberately not "excerpting" at all, so I can tell you that discussion is almost excerpt-free. Just start at post number 9 (the one I linked to) and skip anything that has "spoiler space" in it. There's a lot of talk about caltrops and various book-shapes :-) but very little in the way of actual spoilers, so you should be safe. But you're right to be cautious. I found this one interesting, with a vivid description of Jamie in a Revolutionary War battle. Damn. I thought this next book would take place in Scotland! I really wanted them to stay there, once they got back there! I forget -- Do we know yet why, with the War heating up, they are going over to Scotland? Was that made clear at the end of ABOSAA, after the fire?

Karen is a nice lady who is active on both the LOL boards (here) and the Compuserve Forum, & kinda one of our active go-betweens for the 2 boards, although there are several others who are active on both. I remember my 6th grade teacher had his paddle hanging on a hook. Usually, it was only used a couple times a year, but I can remember it happening. Effective behavioral deterrent, that. I was in elementary school in the 70's & high school in the late 70's (graduated 1981). There was no paddle in any classroom, nor do I recall a teacher ever laying a hand on a child.         I think we all have to keep in mind that Jemmy is NOT a product of the 20th C, but of the 18th C…and I can understand that Jem was not happy about receiving a spanking for his behavior, but I don’t think he was horribly traumatized by it. I think he is more upset about “why” he was punished by his teacher in the 1st place. He doesn’t think talking in the old language (Gaelic) is wrong, after all he has been encouraged all his life to learn it, and his teacher’s reaction to it has to have confused him.         I don’t think that him getting his bum spanked is really this issue here, as much as the why of it….Jemmy doesn’t feel like he did anything wrong in the first place…but then when he uses a lot of “Gaelic” curse words in his anger he knows that was not good…and is not surprised that he was punished for the cursing; Yet he is still perplexed why he got in trouble in the first place. As I was reading the last spoiler about Jem, I got to thinking.... In every exerpt I seem to read about Jem, it's as if he's have such a hard time adjusting to life in the present. He also seems to miss Jamie so much. So I'm thinking Roger, Bree, and Mandy are going to stay in the present. But I do think that we may see it unfold that Roger and Bree find out that J and C are at lallybroch at a particular time. I think that may lead up to a decision being made that Jem goes back to be with his grandparents.

It's discussing an old excerpt (they guesstimate that it was titled 'King Farwell'?) of a scene and storyline which Diana has now admitted to scrapping.
Something to do with Claire thinking Jamie dead, and marrying Lord John... ending up in jail only to have Jamie find her???

If anyone has a link to this excerpt or knows where I can find it - could you please provide the info?

Gang, when a new excerpt announcement is posted, sometimes there isn't a link right away because not everyone can do HTML. What I would ask of everyone is this:

If you are looking for a link, please scan the replies to see if someone has posted one there. Normally, I check this board once a day (in the morning) and if there isn't a link, I put one in.

If you have found a new excerpt, please get the message number and include that in your message. You can find that in the top part of DG's posting. It will look like this: [Msg#60957.2 > 60957.1], the number on the left (60957.2) is the message number. If it's a new post, there will only be the one number.

We have had a rush of new excerpts recently and it will be like this until ECHO comes out (trust me, this is my 3rd book to come out since this board went up) and I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. With 700+ people on the Excerpt list, a lot of people visit here even if they don't post. I appreciate your cooperation in this.

- I always thought that Jem was not going to assimilate easily with others from the 20th century. He is to much like his Granddad.
