I have the same concerns too from my previous experience of running a web forum when I built the Wah Yan site some seven years ago. It was quite a success in the beginning. It was accessed by a broad spectrum of Wah yanites and has a very high volume. Unfortunately, after a while I was forced to close it down when non-Wahyanites started to vandalize the forum with obscene messages, foul languages and personal verbal abuse. One "solution" is password protecting the forum. We could use different passwords for each users or just the same password for all. Those who want to join the forum is required to obtain their passwords via email from our Forum Admin. This has the additional advantage of collecting email addresses for our database. It is a different matter, if the forum is held by the school itself and (to a lesser extent) the PSA. You can't imagine how terrible those messages were... attacking the school and the teachers maliciously. That's why 6 years ago I closed down the web forum in www.wahyan.edu.hk which was maintained by me at that time. I didn't want the reputation of our mother school be tainted.

An formal open forum faces a lot of problems, and there is always a conflict between user-friendliness and security. On the other hand, a private forum like ours, which is not open to the public world, is muh more easy to handle.
