First off, I hated this little cunt right off the bat! Who in the fuck does she think she is? I know what she thinks she is and that's a whole HELL of a lot smarter and sassier than she really is. I'll come back to her because, overall, I liked this movie.

My personal reaction was similar to the one I had to "American Pie." A supposed comedy that everyone else in the theatre was howling at and everyone I knew was saying was hilarious. It's so entirely not. It's humor is stale, has no edge at all, and worst of all, believes that it does. The result is smarmy actors too proud of their sarcasm. I laughed once and chuckled twice. The involantary laugh came when from the cheerleader's remark to Garner who said she was shopping with her girlfriends. The other two were chuckles just to let the pigs around me appreciate the insight in regards to the comments about jocks digging freaky goths and why and the Adderall anecdote.

Monumentally surprising is what I liked best: Jennifer Garner. Not only do I HATE Garner's phoney Guts but I hate the type of character she portrays. First of all, she nails it. Secondly, she makes her likeable. I was pleased by the ending though I didn't come close to shedding a tear (though I did just do so after watching the end of Jedi).

I also dug the coy toying of the relationship between Bateman (who does a good job with a GREAT role) and the pretentious little cunt. His character ruled and deserved better treatment from the script's arc. Whatever, it'd be too tedious to defend him and I'd only open myself up to personal attacks which wouldn't be justified--THOUGH THAT WASN'T HIS KID!!! (SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!I still wouldn't have walked away from Garner because I'd have realized how important this was to her---SPOLIER OVER!!!!)

I would have stuck with her because that's what Catholics do. I would have NAILED this little girl though. Probably not but I would let her flirt with me and then masterbate to her ALOT!!!

Or would I? As cute as she was she was so annoying that I highly doubt I would have allowed myself to be absorbed with the guilty infatuation that I should have been feeling while watching this. I'll concede that she wasn't the Goth stereotype but I do prefer mine with a spunky side. The problem is she was all spunk and that was fair because she explains this and her best friend is some cute little Guinea chick from the Cheerleading squad. The problem is they are not interesting people.

My girlfriend--who cried throughout--said I was threatened by her sass and intellect. YEAH RIGHT!!! First of all, I'm way smarter than her and secondly, why wasn't I threatened by Zooey Deschanel's performace in that indie movie from '02 or '03 (What the fuck was that called? Something about pretty girls I believe) or why have I lusted after Winona Ryder since I saw "Heathers" my freshman year of High School? The answer is because they were three-dimensional characters who didn't rely on going over-the-top in defining their intellect and sass. With Zooey, it stems from a detatched persona that embraces it with valor and sneaks up on you as you start to beleive, as the dude in that flick did, that she's yours and yours alone and only you realize her appeal and therefore you'll always be able to control her and no one else will take her from you. Of course when they do, you are fucked on so many levels. With Winona, there are just so many reasons why she is so hot and sexy but not only physically. She has that certain something that has stayed with her to this day.

This bitch in Juna doesn't have it. That's fine, not everybody can be to my liking. But this girl THINKS she has it and so do the filmmakers. ASSHOLES!!!

I wonder how much of what she says would have been funny if I did like her. I'm guessing not much. As I feared this movie, like most black comedies these days, lacks the edge it prides itself on. It's time to raise the stakes. Not since "Little Miss Sunshine" have I seen a satire or black comedy that sparked my high standards.
