The Paper Chase, Robocop, The Bad News Bears, and Smokin' Aces

THE PAPER CHASE

I had only heard of this movie and that only went as far as the title. But it was on PBS' Film Fest the other night and the local guy gave such an intriguing introduction I decided to watch it. I'm glad I did.

This movie is entirely about one class and how Hart and his fellow students react and prepare to it. It's great. You've got everything else: the varying bloodlines at Harvard, the love interest, etc. But ultimately it is about Hart's obsession with the law to such a degree that he becomes obsessed with his teacher (A brilliant performance by John Houseman who I remember from Dean Witter commercials...or was it Wall Street Journal? At any rate, you'll recognize this dude).

Immediately I felt overwhelmed by their class load and eventually intimidtated by them. It was until after that I realized why Hart succeeded where others failed: HE WAS OBSESSED!!! And that will take guys like him the distance.

Oh yeah, turns out he's been fucking the teachers daughter--who my girl informed me was the Bionic Woman and that she had her doll when she was a kid and..."SHUT UP!!!! I'M TRYING TO WATCH THIS!!!! YEAH!!! GO RUN TO THE BEDROOM!!!!...I'm sorry.)

ROBOCOP

Though not as clever as it wants to be this motherfucker will always rock. What I connected to when I was younger was Weller's torment of trying to piece together a past that had been torn away from him. I used to care...but things have changed. Robocop was ahead of its time in identifying the methods Blackwater would be using. The ending is classic and surpasses any quip Schwarzenegger has ever made.

BAD NEWS BEARS

I'm just gonna assume Matthau got the Academy Award for this. This movie gets it. His scene where he goes off on the kids before realizing he's gone too far is so completely full of the right kind of pathos that only a Nazi won't cry. And if you don't cry at the end when Tanner, beer in hand, tells the Yankees to go FUCK THEMSELVES and little Timmy Lupus hurls the second place trophy at a Yankees head...Well, you're going to hell.

SMOKIN' ACES

(Includes Spoilers)

I know Bungle really dug this but I was a little cool towards it. Though there were certainly things I liked they go too far in their own masterbation of what they are doing. A little subtletly perhaps...and no Alicia Keys, not just for effect. At least Affleck gets it early.

There are so many people in this I can't believe Walken didn't worm his way in...or Buscemi. Great shoot-out at the end but the ending is so contrived (not to mention obvious) that Reynolds poor acting down the stretch is hardly noticed. And then they make Ari the Mob Guys' kid??? Well that's just stupid.

Liotta was good (as always)
Keys was annoying
Reynolds disappointing and out of his element. I like him in comedies where his self-deprecation is charming
Ari was STUPID. He so rules on "Entourage" but he should leave that character there. Hey Piven, if you wanna do film I suggest you put your mouth back on Cusack's dick
Andy Garcia is laughable. He has no prescence and hasn't had any since "Godfather III"
Do I need to mention Ben?
NOW!!! The best part was the little kid doing karate while his grandmother was cracking up. HE RULED!!!!
