I just heard that a hero of mine has passed away. When I was younger and dove headfirst into politics I came away a little scarred. I was young and protected and didn't know how much Catholics were hated. I didn't know that at one point we were considered animals.

What I had always known was that William F. Buckley was the architect of the modern conservative movement. What I didn't know--and never would have guessed--was that Mr. Buckley was a Roman Catholic.

I'll never forget the day I found that one out. I was reading one of his books. It was a compilation of his pieces and this particular one was an open letter to his son (who wrote "Thank You For Smoking").

I'll never forget the pride I felt on that day. This guy was one of us. We weren't animals.

Buckley would go on and on surprising me. His fight with Vidal, his service in the O.S.S., etc. But it all culminated last spring when I analyzed his essay "Why Don't We Complain?" Rush Limbaugh would never be able to put anything like this together. Not in spirit nor style.

Buckley passed away today. But he passed on something to lunatic Catholic a long time ago.
