The second one was instantly forgettable (Though I reserve the right to change my mind as I've only seen it once, in the Marines and on Korean Bootleg; add to that I was a miserable bastard at the time and the only thing I remember is the Giant Cookie singing underwater at the end and the "Extra" type being swept up on the red carpet. The people around me RUINED it for me.) "There are some very funny moments, the best of which is the Pinocchio bit. But the movie takes a long time in getting to them, and there are long stretches where it just sits there, as in the early scene where Shrek and Donkey are riding in the coach. It greatly calls attention to what made the original film so charming, and what's missing in the second film: the clever dialogue." Agreed. PLUS Banderas' cat annoyed me. But he was better in the Third. "There is nothing in the second film to match the "ogres are like onions" speech in the original. Remember that scene?" About peeling away the layers? Not really. Is it as funny as Hoffman's speech about layers to Schwartzman in Huckabees? "And remember how it gets incorporated into later scenes? The humor in that film builds. And it's poignant in addition to being funny." Hmmm. I didn't connect to that but the next time I watch it I'll look for that. I just assumed they were mocking other movies that flesh out the characters and then cop-out at the end. It didn't hit me over the head like it did with you. "I must say, however, that John Cleese and Antonio Banderas were great in it." I must say, however, that you are WRONG!!! Banderas was funny in the third one and you know I HATE John Cleese. "I found the third film an improvement. The premise, about a revolt by the fairy tale villains, was a clever return to what made the original special." YES!!!! That scene in the bar was BRILLIANT and well-crafted. Perfect on all accounts right down to making the evil step-sister a tired old bar wench. BRILLIANT!!! I deal with these people and to apply that stereotype to her was something very special. "The pop culture references were kept down to a sane level, allowing the fairy tale elements the attention they deserved. I could have used a bit less of the Justin-Timberlake-as-ornery-teen subplot, but I laughed hard several times during the film, especially in the nightmare sequence with the babies." That was gay. I'm Catholic and therefore NOT AFRAID to have millions of kids around me. You know what I mean. I want to have 6 kids and therefore, storylines that feature the dread of what a HUMAN LIFE does to one's lifestyle NEVEr work on me. "As for homophobia, the best performance was clearly from Rupert Everett as the villain." This time around, I agree. I was stunned they had him back. His ship had sailed many years ago. Shrek may be the post-modern version of Hollywood Squares. "Still, both of these sequels lack the nobility or satire of the original." That's an intellectual statement and I'm not prepared to speak to that til I get my Adderall. Having said that, the Third rings truest to my gut though I really did love the original. BUT NOTHING was as brilliant as the funeral scene. PERHAPS EVER!!! I feel an obsession coming on...and I'm not afraid. "Name me a single line in either of them to match Lord Farquaad's 'Some of you may die, but that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make.' " Right now I can't...BUT, I'm going to go to imdb and look at the memorable quotes from the third one. Lousy I realize but I know those geeks put enough on there for me. I loved the Third one and not just because I was high. I was high for the first as well. I'll BE BACK! [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
