Jenny, most of these titles are won in some sort of competition. They are fine in themselves and can be a lot of fun achieving, but you are correct. They do not mean that the holder of the title is going to be a well-rounded family companion. Perhaps a Good Canine Certificate might relate to the real world, but perhaps not. Best bet is to see both parents and interact with them but this is often not feasable due to distance. Something else to remember is that inproper training or experiences during a pup's developemental stages can ruin the best puppy in the world. Read several books on puppy training and mental developement and just always remember that YOU are the pack leader and most pups will be fine companions. (Most people I knew growing up had good dogs-of all breeds, pure and/or mixed, before we knew all the "latest" techniques).
Good luck. Have fun. JB
