Well Jenny I don’t know much about other titles but schutzhund, the breed specific test for the GSD, has been identifying GSD breed stock for 100 years and because of that the GSD is today by far the most used service dog in the world i.e., military K-9’s, police K-9’s, service dogs, detection dog, seeing eye dogs, prison dogs, sentry dogs, tending (herding) dogs and companion dogs. I ‘m sure there are more uses the GSD fulfills but you get my point. That said, no test is a good as the actual work of the breed in that effort because a test, as you said, only emulates real work situations. But testing is much better than doing nothing other than keeping dogs in a kennel, and because of that the prospective purchaser must take a breeder word that the dog is all that the breeder says it is. Some breeders because of how they identify breed stock are believable; some for the same reason tend not to be. It is not that the breeders that don’t do much to tests their dogs are necessarily dishonest, it is most just don’t know what their dogs will do or not do while under the pressure of work, but a problem arises when they say they do know. Can a test identify all sub-standard traits? No, but a well rounded test can help identify dogs that cannot contain themselves around non-threatening people, which seems to come up more and more in this breed. A test can help identify a dog lacking work ethic. A test can help identify a dog with sub-standard conformation, in that its phenotype will not allow it to complete its work, and a test can help identify a dog whose nerves will not allow it to do its work while in drive, a test can help identify a dog that can’t be controlled while in drive and therefore an all round test can go a long way in weeding out dogs that won’t make a steady reliable companions as most Boerboels will hopefully become. That’s the point. Best Regards Norman
