Prey is acceptable, but my PREFERRED drive is fight drive. It is similar to prey, but there is more to it than just that. Prey lacks "intensity" typically (not always but many times. Defense has intensity, but lacks confidence and committment to follow through and finish the task at hand. I have worked several boerboels, and one thing I have noticed is many lack the committment to finish a task. Some will go for a bite and do short sends, but typically after a quick initial hard bite they start to back off and start to avoid the conflict. IMO, that is not acceptable for a PP dog, as once a dog begins thinking avoidance they can many times be driven off.

That said, I do KNOW there are SOME good boerboels out there. I would like to see more of them become a standard for the breed.

IMO, temperament (which is many times a polite word for balance of stability and defense) alone isn't enough, although it is a start. I would like to see that with at least more prey, but preferrably not necessarily prey, but "fight." That combined with stability IMO makes a great family guardian.
