I'll preface my comments by saying that in no way do I have the sort of experience and knowledge that David, Anthony and many others on this board have. However, I've been around for a while and I do 'work' my dogs on the farm, so I'm going to throw in my 2pence.

I've known James for about 7 years. He's been talking about the need to look at temperament and health as well as looks all that time and about preserving the working qualities for at least 5 years. I know he's had a 'Working organisation' in mind for a number of years and that he joined EBBASA because he wanted to make a positive contribution. The recent change in the SABT stance and subsequent discussion just precipitated the announcement. I don't always agree with James but he's not about money or marketing, he sincerely wants to do what's best for the breed.

I'm not sure that one can test in abstact for the balance of qualities and drives that make up my idea of a good farm dog other than by working them on a farm, which is why I'd dearly love to be able to buy one of David's dogs. (I still hope that one day, he'll find he's got a surplus female and make a mad Englishwoman very happy.)

However, I'm absolutely sure that we could test for social stability, resilience in the face of environmental stimuli and the willingness to face a potential threat. Just the first two would be a great improvement given the slew of rubbish being turned out by the 'feed and breed' crew.

Like David, I'm doubtful that many people will want to test at first. Certainly, I've got nowhere pushing for breeders to do something as basic as put their dogs through a CGC or BH in the UK. However, I can remember when nobody hip scored, now even the scum hip and elbow score because they can't sell puppies if they don't.

If those of us who care about Boerboels as something other than lawn ornaments keep banging the drum about the need to test and prove temperament and leading by example, I hope that eventually market forces will push more breeders down this road. I don't think we lose anything by trying.

In the meantime, I'd still kill to get my hands on one of David's dogs....

regards,
Lucinda
