Yeah, it's really weird the way the numbers are distributed.
Supposedly an epidemic began in the late 70's in raccoons along the mid-Atlantic states and it's been spreading from there.
In the area around Mississippi, the 2007 numbers for confirmed cases from the CDC look like this:

Alabama: 80 cases
Arkansas: 33
Louisiana: 6
Mississippi: 3
Tennessee: 132

States with the highest numbers are:

Maryland: 431
NC: 474
New York: 512
Penn: 439
Texas: 969
Virginia: 730
Georgia: 301

Those are some scary numbers.
