I am certainly not a fan of the appraisal system, but I have judged dogs of several breeds at dog shows. I have sometimes found that dogs that suited my personal preference were not the dogs that met the standard desired by the breed club, so I would place the "better" dog ahead of the "lesser" dog but might try to buy the lower placed dog.
Judges, and appraisers, are not supposed to grade the dogs based on their personal preferences, but by the "Standard".
