Let me make this very clear once and for all, because frankly I'm sick and tired of having to explain it over and over again.
Star Trek Canon rules.
Paramount considers what is shown on screen to be canon. It cannot be overruled by technical manuals or books.
Paramount does not consider the Technical Manuals to be canon. However, because they were written by the people that actually create and work on the show, many people give them weight in these debates.
This forum allows the use of the Technical Manuals, but if they conflict with what is shown on screen, then the technical manual is always considered to be wrong.
Let's have an example to illustrate.
Let's say the technical manual says that the Captain's ready room does not have a toilet, but we see on screen that it does. In that scenario, the technical manual is considered to be wrong.
However, this is not an all or nothing affair. The fact that the TM might be wrong in the case of the Captain's toilet, does not necessarily mean it would be wrong about how the tranporter works. Therefore, evidence regarding the TM will still be allowed, unless that is shown to be wrong too.
Furthermore, in some cases, the TM gives us info that has never been seen on the show. A good example of this is the presence of the Captains Yacht on the E-D. We never see in the show, but because the TM says it is there, we accept that.
Paramount does not consider the ST novels to be canon, and this forum does NOT allow evidence from ST novels.
Paramount does not consider the games to be canon, and generally they should NOT be used.
Star wars canon rules.
Lucas film considers what appears on screen to be canon. It cannot be overruled by technical manuals or books, regardless of how many books may disagree with the films.
Lucas film does consider the technical manuals and books to be a limited form of canon. Lucasfilm has stated that:-
"The analogy is that every piece of published Star Wars fiction is a window into the 'real' Star Wars universe. Some windows are a bit foggier than others. Some are decidedly abstract. But each contains a nugget of truth to them."
In other words, some are right and some are probably wrong. For the purposes of this group, TMs and novels are allowed, but in a conflict with a film, the film always wins.
Lucasfilm considers the games to be official. They hold the lowest rank in the SW universe. Consequently, they are allowed, but their use should be considered very carefully, and they should only be used to back up a position proven using evidence from the films or books.
I hope that is clear. Let me make another thing clear. I set up this group with these rule. I stick to them, and they are the rules of this group. It's a case of take it or leave it I'm afraid. If you don't agree with the rules, then I guess this group is not for you.
