After reading your good site about the "Batman/Superman" movie, I came across the casting for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Michael Keaton was the first choice, followed by Brad Pitt (??). While I loved the first Batman movie, and while I liked how Keaton made up for his lack of physical prowess with his mental prowess, I must digress on this issue. When I saw Brad Pitt's name on the list, I became hysterical and I needed to express my opinion on the perfect candidate for the Dark Knight. In my opinion, for the role of Gotham's legendary protector (and arguably the greatest comic character ever), I feel that the role of Batman should be played by none other than talented but underrated Ralph Fiennes. After seeing Fiennes' performances in classics like "Quiz Show" and "Schindler's List" I realized that Fiennes posseses the goods to be a brooding man with a duel identity. My opinion dramatically intensified after seeing the film "Red Dragon". If you examine Fienne's role in the film, he played a sadistical murderer with two sides to his personality. Fienne's (in the film) posseses an incredible physique and showed that he had an inordinate amount of strength (during the weight-lifting scene). Fienne's (although overshadowed by Hopkins as the main villain) performance as an intense and brooding character made me realize that he'd be perfect for the role of the brooding Dark Knight detective we all know and love. Fiennes also showed excellent acting ability when intimidating other people throughout the film. If you look at the scene where he captures a photo-journalist, you'll see Ralph's amazing ability to intimidate and humiliate (qualities that Batman indefinitely posseses). Although his character in Red Dragon was sadistic, there were similarites to the Dark Knight (dual personalities, brooding, intimidation, physical prowess, mental toughness). "Red Dragon", I believe, is the best example in showing Ralph Fienne's incredible ability to play a brooding and unstable character. A prime film that showcases Ralph's ability to play the rich playboy is the movie "Quiz Show", which focuses on Fiennes as an heir to a premier intellectual family in America playing on a game show, really shows Fiennes' ability to play the arrogant and obnoxious (although intelligent) business playboy. Throughout the film (especially during the scenes involving the actual tv game show) Fiennes shows his incredible talents portraying a rich and socially obnoxious playboy. Ralph Fiennes is my personal pick for the incredible role of the Dark Knight detective we know as Batman.
In conclusion, I hope this letter finds its way to the right hands, so that my opinion can offer a new insight in the burden of casting a talented actor for the fictional icon that is Batman. I know my opinion might be lost with the other million opinions you might receive, but please value all opinions. While Brad Pitt is an up and coming young talent in acting, I believe Ralph Fiennes presents all the tools in portraying a popular American icon such as Batman. Thank you for listening, guys.
