*A tall otter with dusky brown fur and yellow streaks running through it comes in from the pouring rain soaked. She takes off her sodden lavender coloured travelling cloak and hangs it carefully by the glowing fire. She leans her equally tall hazel staff and leans it on a wall. As she sits down, legs crossed, you notice her oddly large footpaws and in the flickering light, her large ears. She smiles happily at you, her eyes showing she’s glad to be among friends once again*
So you want to know my story? Ok, I’ll tell you.
Before I was born my clan was a regular band of otters from the rivers up north. They never stayed put for more than a month at a time and moved on whenever the mood took them. The leader of the clan was a large burly otter by the name of Coscha Steams, so called for his love of cooking on an open fire. One day, the clan moved to a particularly nice lake that was big enough for five clans of otters, and so Coscha loved the place. There were plenty of fish in the lake, shaded glens full of tasty plants and medical herbs. Strangely, the otters didn’t want to move on and so they stayed a bit longer. By the time they had lived there for two months, Coscha wondered if any other beasts lived nearby, so he and three other otters, Dustava, Moraga and Philnet, wandered around the lake until they found another camp of otters. They entered the camp and were immediately stopped by a two pretty young ottermaids who showed them around. The strange thing was, every otter in the camp had very long ears and footpaws compared to other otters. Nobody seemed to know why as it had been a trait going back many seasons. Coscha made good friends with Rudderback, who lead the clan that day and when Coscha’s clan decided to permanently stay at the lake, both clan’s became firm allies and eventually the two clans became one.
One of the otters that had gone on the original journey to find the other clan, Dustava, fell in love with one of the ottermaids who had first shown them around. Her name was Moorla. They were married in a ceremony held on a large raft in the middle of the lake and soon, I was born. Of course, I ended up with large footpaws and ears, though not as large as my mums! They make me very clumsy on land but incredibly fast in the water and of course, I can hear sounds from pretty far away too, which helps. I grew up very happily with Dustava and Moorla but as I got older I felt a yearning to go travelling and I felt I had a home somewhere else where I could have adventures. Moorla didn’t want me to go but Dustava said it would be good for my growing up so I was given a course to travel down to Redwall Abbey with Carlica, who was my mum’s friend and she travelled a lot. It was a very long journey and I constantly missed my mum and dad but I had Carlica for company. We were never attacked or hit any trouble so we were incredibly lucky. When we got to Redwall we were welcomed with widespread arms and I made my home there. I soon joined DAB and enjoyed being around mates for many months, but then Carlica Came to find me. My clan was in trouble. A sickness had taken them all captive and not even Moraga knew a cure. I needed to leave to help and I did so immediately, but that is, as we say, another story, which I will no doubt tell soon!
