Witness: Ballot boxes hijacked
By JAMES APA GUMUNO
A WITNESS yesterday told the court that voters in his village in Kandep, Enga province, did not vote because the ballot papers and boxes were hijacked.
Witness Palo Pasum alleged that lawyer Alfred Manase, who is the petitioner challenging the win of MP Don Polye, and his supporters were involved in the hijack of the ballot boxes for Wert 1 and Wert 2.
Pasum, who is the ward councillor for Wert 1 and Wert 2 in the Marian constituency in Kandep, said polling scheduled for July 3 last year at Wert 1 and Wert 2 did not take place.
He said they waited that day at the Wert 2 ceremonial ground but the ballot boxes and papers did not turn up.
He said that evening, he was told the boxes had been hijacked.
He claimed the hijack took place at Tanjpak village, where Mr Manase comes from.
He claimed that there was also no polling at Mumut 1 and Mumut 2.
Pasum said the next day, councillor Steven Gig and himself led 200 people, all painted in mud, to the Kandep council chamber to protest that they did not vote.
He said they asked for new ballot papers to vote, but were denied.
Pasum, the second defence witness to testify, will be cross examined when the trial resumes today.
Manase is petitioning the court to declare the election of Works, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Polye null and void due to alleged illegal acts, errors and omissions during the elections.
