Four held for alleged rape

FOUR members of a visiting rugby league team participating in the SP Cup rugby league competition are being questioned by police in relation to an alleged rape of a young woman in Port Moresby yesterday morning. NCD police confirmed that a report of an alleged rape was lodged yesterday which resulted in the four league players, from the out-of-town team which played at Lloyd Robson Oval on Sunday, taken in to the Boroko police station where they were being questioned.

The senior executive of the company sponsoring the team when contacted yesterday said he had heard a “rumour” of a rape incident and was investigating it.
Police said the complainant, a 20-year-old woman (named), from Pangia in Southern Highlands province identified the men soon after the alleged rape at Konedobu along the Poreporena Freeway.

The police sexual offence squad (SOS) is investigating the alleged rape and is looking into the medical report of the young woman.
The woman, in her complaint to police, stated that she was in the company of a female friend and two male accomplices when they left the premises of a prominent hotel (named) between 4am and 4.30am yesterday.

As they were walking towards the Konedobu Oval, she alleged that they were attacked by about four men who chased off the two men and the female friend before they dragged her to the oval and repeatedly raped her.

Attempts to get the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chief executive officer Jeff Wade and the chairman of the PNG National Rugby Football League (PNGNRL) Thomas Higgins for comments were unsuccessful.
This rape allegation comes a month after another serious incident involving SP Cup players ń this one at Tokua Airport in East New Britain province involving seven members of the Mioks team as they were about to board their Air Niugini flight to Port Moresby.
The scuffle with Air Niugini staff and airport security at Tokua put the PNG Rugby Football League and the PNG National Rugby League, which oversees the SP Cup competition, in an embarrassing situation.

The seven were arrested, charged and fined more than K2,000 when they appeared before the Kokopo District Court for assaults after being charged under the Summary Offences Act, and breaching CAA regulations.
