I am experiencing a thorny dilemma here.... I liked this fic a lot, but is it really BtVS?

I found the original premise quite intriguing. Vampirism is the result of a demon-inspired plague, which can have as an unexpected result: vampires with souls. I also liked the idea of the exploitation of the DHSTs, since it explores an interesting theme we have seen in BtVS, i.e. the existence of prejudice of humans for demons who have the potential for good. The action built nicely, with a good balance between focusing on the ship and focusing on the plot development. There were also nice parallels, with interesting twists: Caritas, but with Wes as the host; Giles and Joyce as a couple, being the parents of Buffy and Dawn; Tara and Willow, but Willow as a vamp; and my favorite, the pairing of Justine the Vampire slayer and Doyle. I would have like the history of relationships between humans and vamps [the vamp and his lover at the hospital] to be explored a bit more. The love scenes between Angel and Buffy were well done, though I do find biting / drinking blood as part of lovemaking a bit icky.

But there were a few inconsistencies in terms of plot. The most glaring of which, for me, was the presence of Daniel Holtz. He is a figure out of time and place, the result of a spell by Sahjhan, brought forward to wreck revenge. Why he was a contemporary of Buffy was never explained, and bugged me every time he appeared. I also didn’t “get” the ending at the Hellmouth... I read it twice and still seem to be missing something. The gathering of the vamps and the rising power confused me.

I would have liked a bit more backstory. Who is this Varkesh guy, anyway? And what does he want? What was life in the Wastelands like? And the appearance of Dawn and Connor in the epilogue... Some of these elements seemed thrown in just for effect.

But, in general, the story was original, portrayed the ship in a light that was based on the original [the soulmate take] and in a way that makes the pairing understandable to others, and did it in an interesting way. At the risk of being stoned... I found this Angel sexier.

*now ducking and running to the bunker*

But back to my original point... Is this BtVS fanFic?

For the first third of the fic, I have to say that, except for Giles and Forrest, the characters may have had the same names, but I hardly recognized them. Angel was less broody [a good thing for me] but so obsequious. Now, maybe the situation demanded it [being a DHST], but I would have expected some well-read intellectual snark. Buffy seemed to be the Slayer of The Wish, but suddenly morphed into a Barbie-dreamhouse-wannabe. There were also many characters I wanted to hear more about: Fred, Willow [especially!], Tara, and Wes. And what happened to Xander? He was introduced as a solid supporting character, and then disappeared. I must say that I did not see kernels of the personalities of the characters I know on TV.

Overall, the story was well-written with minimal mistakes and repetitious use of words, and a good plot.

I rate it an 85.
