I loved the world the author created. Indie took an interesting premise and managed to keep me involved in the story. My score 98

Whoa, where to start.

Okay, when I first started reading this story it took me a little while to get into it, mainly because it was so AU. I was literally pushing myself through the first chapter but I decided to keep going.

I'm glad I did.

The more I read the more interested I became. This fic really surprised me. I hardly ever go for anything that I can't see happening on the show(especially in BtvS fics) in some manner or another. This however, really caught my interest. The history that the author built behind this city and the way things were was very well done. For some reason I pictured the setting in a olden time setting(say around the late 18th century. Maybe it was the way I was seeing the souled vampires as slaves and the way it was back in that time. I don't know. *shrug*

Anyway, I usually don't like fics that act as if vampires are not creatures of the night and mostly evil, but this fic was okay. I felt like it was told on a different scale than that of the Buffyverse. It was about a culture(these souled vamps) being used as slaves and degraded. There was a very good message behind the fic if you are into that and it did strike a cord in me in some parts. I didn't particular see most of the characters as those that we are familiar with except for Buffy and Angel, maybe Giles. Even their characterization had a lot of parts that I didn't really see the same characters we know but like I said, this setting and for me, the story on the whole wasn't Buffyverse much except for the fact that it dealt with vampires, slayers, and the council. Still, the story struck a cord in me and surprisingly enough, so did the Buffy/Angel stuff. The writer really has a nack for writing very sensual and erotic scenes, yet not making it the sort of erotic stuff that I see far too often from a lot of people. Simply said, their scenes(especially the scene before they entered the Caritas) actually made me think about having to turn on the AC in November :)

Also, I really liked the fact that Holtz wasn't as hard as we thought him to be. We first thought he was this underlying Council member that hated all demons yet by the end we could see that he truly cared for Buffy in a fatherly way. Hell, if I were to venture I'd say more so that Giles in the fic. Don't get me wrong I do like the fact that Giles was her father in this one it's just I wished the author had written some of the passion for Giles that he had with Holtz towards Buffy at the end. However, it still all flowed pretty well and it kept my interest. I was sort of wishy, washy by the ending but still a job well done.

Overall I give this fic a 91
