Despite never having read a B/G fic before, I enjoyed this one. Good characterisations and such, although occasionally the continuity lost me. Nearing the end it became rushed, and it could have been extended out a bit more. Then again, that could be just my opinion. It is however a good fic to introduce someone to the pairing.

This was the ship, on first glance, I was least anxious to read. I like the paternal relationship Giles and Buffy share, especially since she has a schmuck of a father. Positive father role models are scarce on TV in general, and Buffy in particular. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like this story, and much of it has to do with the giftedness of the writer.

This story is built on canon, and believably adds to it in a logical and convincing way. Characterizations were well drawn, and in line with how we know them. I still think, however, that Buffy would have been a bit more freaked out when she realized her feelings for Giles; more detail on her experiences in the intervening years linked to seeing herself as mature way beyond her years would have made her reaction more authentic to me. Giles’ reaction was well within his character. I particularly liked the way the author portrayed Angel and Cordy. And, of course, I wanted more information on Spike. Yahtzee’s style [trademark?], though, seems to be to drop tantillizing tidbits into a story with little explanation.

The plot was interesting [even though Yahtzee claims there is none] and I liked her invention of the surfboarding crystal. It was nicely original. The writing was exceptional and well crafted.

There was a limitation, though, for me and I’m not quite sure what it is. The story lacked the passion of Phoenix Burning. It needed some ZING. I am not sure how or what, but it needed some kind of hook to keep me wanting more.

I would recommend this.
