Jeff sat up quickly, knocking his head into the overhanging rock. Rubbing the place vigorously, the boy crawled into the open air. The first thing he noticed was Gwennie, stiff and tense, her stomach pressed close to the ground. Her eyes were very wide. Had he not been able to follow her gaze, he might not have noticed the creature sitting on the path; as he looked into the shining violet eyes of what appeared to be a giant blue cat, his mouth fell open.

Now, Jeffrey Gage Ryan had been raised to be a sensible young man, who believed in the evils beyond the city walls only to the extent that this belief kept him within those walls. But since he had actually left the city, he had encountered Cheysuli, Jellicles, and a winged elf, and the vague faith he had had in the existence of such things had turned into rock-hard belief, for he could not deny that which he could see and smell, hear and touch. And so the sight of a giant, talking, blue cat mere yards away did not overwhelm him as it might have only days before.

"Stay back," he murmured to Alexis, holding out an arm to stop her as he crouched just beside Gwennie. He tried to speak to the blue cat, but words failed him, and he noticed with surprise Angie standing off to one side with a dark expression.

The tension in the air was almost palpable. Gwenneth felt dizzy, staring helplessly at the newcomer. NobelNomis Le Brandonburg, the name rang in her head...and Silent Paw. That was what he called himself...and he was like her. Is that what I am? A Silent Paw? Ah, Creator, is this real? I thought I was...the only one.... She furiously blinked back tears, for her Boy would certainly not expect his pet to weep.

Angie held Jeff's gaze steadily for a moment, brows lowered and dark eyes noncommittal. "Kid with the fuzzy hair, there, is Jeff," she said to Nobel in icy tones. "Girl is Alexis. The cat is Jeff's pet, Gwen."

::You'd damn well better play along,:: she spat fiercely to the Silent Paw in a mindlink. ::You're enough of a freak as it is, no need to point out that you've been spying on us.::

"And as for you," she continued out loud, turning to Nobel. "Just what kind of 'goal' do you think we're after? We're crossing the mountains to escape some Cheysuli that attacked Fuzzy; we have no actual business in the East. So you can tag along, I guess, but you'd best remember that I'm in charge around here. Got it?" Her eyes flashed as she looked squarely at the Silent Paw.
