Kalea laughed at the tiny liren. ::I dunno, 'Nada! Maybe humans can wiggle their ears, if they try hard enough.:: She winked at Dante. ::Don't worry, Dante-- preddy soon you'll be real big. But for right now, Gabe's countin' on you ta look after me...:: She made a face for the child's benefit.
Just then, Gabriel called over the other young warrior, and Kalea looked up as Michael received his instructions. ::And now you'll haveta look after Nashy, too, since Mike's heading out! See, you can help out lots.:: She smiled warmly at the child.
::What's going on?:: she asked Gabriel privately, curiosity overcoming discretion.
--
Michael looked gravely up at his older brother, inwardly swelling with pride.
"Yes, Gabriel," he said firmly. "We'll be back as soon as we can."
Without hesitation he strode off into the woods. When he was out of sight of the party, he glanced quickly around and performed his transformation. He was not allowed to don his wings often, and was therefore a bit self-conscious about executing the change, but he was relieved and delighted to see the smooth transfer of dusky skin to gleaming silver feathers. He stretched his wings luxuriously.
::Evan!:: he called joyously. ::Gabe's sending us to the nearest clan for supplies. Come on, let's fly!:: He immediately lauched himself into the air and after a few clumsy, faltering flaps found his balance and climbed steadily through the branches until the morning sun struck his body uninhibited. He circled slowly, waiting for his lir.
--
::I'll be right there!:: Evan called happily to his warrior. But he hesitated a moment more, staring after the young humans as they ran through the misty morning woods. They intrigued him; he made a mental note to discuss it with Michael later. But for now, they had a mission.
The young golden-feathered eagle took off from his branch. Because he was more practised in flying his wingbeats were stronger and steadier than his warrior's, but Michael was brave and determined. They met wordlessly in midair and played for a moment, circling and diving at each other jokingly, before soaring together in the direction of the nearest Cheysuli clan.
