OOC: *sniffles* I'm so happy... Wes'll be a real treat to play! I love your little winged elf, too! *hugs*

--

He followed his own shadow across the snow.

Flying near the mountain peaks was one of his favorite exercises; he convinced himself that the frigid air was bracing as it rippled over his bare chest. He loved to climb to these great heights and soar for hours, barely exerting energy as he moved slowly with wide-flung wings (his wingspan was over thirty feet when he really stretched), or perhaps diving down into the rocky crevices for a bit of fast-paced dodging among the boulders.

But this was a morning for soaring. The spring sunshine was warm on his wings and back, and he gazed down serenely at his shadow with eyes the color of the brilliant sky behind him, clear and without pupils. His beak and strong, thick avian legs were a burnished crimson; his sweeping crest and long, flowing tail were the bright gold of the tips of his wings (which were otherwise a muted orange), in contrast to his pale gold hair and burnt orange skin. He wore only a pair of plain, grey slacks cut off at the knee. He was a phoenix halfblood and one of the last of his kind, young and strong, ruler of the skies on the eastern side of the Hedrons.

Normally he didn't let anything disturb him while he was flying, but he occasionally made exception when something of interest caught his eye. A good friend, for example.

Namely, Shakira.

Wesimbi Kaehn had very few acquaintences and even fewer real friends, for he preferred a more solitary life and did not frivolously distribute affection. But this young elven child, though he had found her irritating at first, had captured his heart before he knew what was happening, and now they often flew, explored, or just sat and talked together. From the lightning-fast, erratic movements of his young friend, Wesimbi judged that Shakira had news of some import. He smiled indulgently and banked slowly away from the mountains, confident that the elf would judge his direction and meet him at one of his cliffside nests.

He landed lightly on the short outcropping in the center of an enormous, nearly sheer cliff, gazing out over the eastern lands with wings folded neatly over his back as he crouched on the ledge. To his right, in a deep niche in the rock, was his favorite springtime bed, warm and safe from wind and rain. Moments later his small friend came careening in from the open skies and skidded across the rock, nearly colliding with him.

"Easy, there," he murmured in his characteristic voice, low and steady and mild. "What's all the fuss?"

He listened very attentively to Shakira's stories. They often played tricks on each other of this sort, but the little elven face turned anxiously up to him was sincere; Wes knew that Shakira couldn't bluff this well. He pondered carefully over all that he had heard, while the winged elf hopped impatiently from one foot to the other beside him.

At last he flexed his wings and spoke carefully. "It would appear to me," he said thoughtfully, "that these diverse creatures are united, yet choose for some reason to travel in seperate groups. Cheysuli, you say? And Jellicles! My goodness, the Jellicles never come this far east. And young Cheysuli traveling outside of a tribe... Curious! Most curious, Kira. And heading for the mountain pass, of all places.

"Tell the Old One? Patience, my young friend, patience; he who rules the mountain eyeries should not lightly be disturbed. But don't look so disappointed-- we can make a game of this, yet." Wes smiled kindly at his eager young companion and peered with keen eyes at the forest. "We shall keep an eye on these strange travelers, Kira, you and I. They may yet turn away before they reach the mountains; there is a good distance between. But if it develops that they truly mean to attempt the Hedrons... Well, we shall have to accost them, shall we not? But we shall be patient, much as it annoys you."

Wesimbi stretched his wings luxuriously, momentarily covering the entire ledge in shadow, before folding them again. "Time to play spy, Kira. Swift and silent as shadows we must be! I would rather you not stay around the three young Cheysuli, as you have already been sighted there... Oh, would you rather?" He laughed, his golden crest slicked back along the curve of his head. "Very well, Kira, but take extra care! Their eyes will be sharpened for your wings, little one. I myself shall alternate between the other two groups, and see what I can see. Come, now, let's go! And meet back here at evening."

Wes straightened and moved to the edge of the cliff, without hesitation throwing himself into the air. As he glided down towards the forest, well to the south of the travelers so his shadow would not be spotted, he smiled at Shakira as she winged along in his slipstream.
