"Cheysuli? The boy is bonded to the Silent Paw?" Wesimbi's eyes narrowed. "If you lie, warrior---"

"It's not a lie!" Michael spoke up, feeling a sudden irrational surge of anger toward the Guardian. "The Silent Paw is dying because the boy doesn't know what he is! She can't get through to him---none of us can."

The Guardian was quiet for a moment in thought. But before he could speak his mind on the situation, he heard the voice of the Silent Paw liren as she spoke to the warrior and his wolf.

::Dear Rio, and brave Gabriel...take the children home. Send the Jellicles back to safety, remove the little warriors from this terrible scene. I will burden you no longer. My boy and I are going home---back to the City. At least there, death shall come in peace. And he shall not be afraid. Farewell.::

He held up a hand to stay immediate action in the group, and froze in place with his head tilted in a manner of intent listening.

"The ista-ban leads the boy and the Silent Paw into the mountains," he said at last. "Yet the other girl and the tiger-lir retreat. Your clan is sundered, warrior---what now shall you do?"
