In the sunlight slanting through the thick glass of the windows, Cassiel glanced and saw that her coat was a pale creamy yellow, putting her in mind of the whipped butter her mother used to make when they were all children and all happy, living together among the trees and worrying only about what deed might eventually earn the brothers their gold. How long ago that had been! She looked up at her brother presently, saw the smoldering rage in his face, now pinched and harrowed, that had once been so innocent and prone to smile.
She spun around and threw a heavy cuff at Damian, who skittered back with a contemptuous leer. The man called to him and he went there sulkily, pacing behind Azrael with lashing tail.
::They will not hurt me,:: she assured Monet, and moved with a Silent Paw's liquid grace to stand between the tiger and her brother. ::Let him go,:: she said to Azrael, and her voice was firm. But her heart pounded maddeningly, knowing how close she was to leaving her sister stranded. Azrael would not kill her - he had invested too much in her - but what would stop him from imprisoning her again, incapacitating her here? She was counting on her knowledge of her brother, his arrogance and twisted honor, that he would let her go because he knew she could never take her own life and leave her siblings to fend for themselves, that his investment would be safe as long as Cassie had someone to look after. She had presently chosen the tiger as her charge, but would Azrael see that? She could only hope.
::Have courage,:: she told the tiger. ::You will soon be free.:: She hoped that she was telling the truth.
