Jeffrey opened his eyes. His vision swam and for a moment he could not remember where he was... And then the memories came rushing back: chasing Gwennie out of the city, following Alexis's cries, being befuddled by her beauty and charm only to discover her hideous treachery. Oh, that such a jewel of femininity should be in league with horrendous demons! Jeff shuddered, and a rock of misery dropped into his stomach. He watched the firelight flicker on the outer wall of the tent in which he lay, and did not stir within the blanket that had been wrapped around him. His upper back throbbed gently and his wrists were chafed, but he was unbound. Perhaps even now he could escape!
He abandoned the thought after one surreptitious glance at the tent's entrace. Alexis sat there, half inside the tent, looking not at him but gazing at the unseen fire. Its light danced in her hair like a river of moonlight. The rock of misery in Jeff's stomach gave a sudden lurch, and he lowered his head carefully. No, there was no hope of escape. Perhaps he was to be a sacrifice to whatever vicious pagan gods the demons worshipped; perhaps he would be turned loose for the terrible black wolf to hunt and devour. Jeff resigned himself to a gruesome fate and closed his eyes tightly.
Gwennie, where are you?

When the wolf's mindlink reached her, Angie jumped so violently with surprise that she fell from her perch on the low branch of a tree, crashing in the brush below with a terrible din. Her face aflame with embarrassment and anger, she stood up, brushed herself off, and marched straight into the camp. From the way she carried herself she might have been a princess, but to any but the most loving eye she was a ragged, malnourished human g.irl of about thirteen. Her tangled locks, which might have been red if they were clean, hung down nearly to her waist like seaweed, and large, bright brown eyes sparkled with life in a pale but grubby face. She walked right past the wolf without flinching and stood across the fire from the enormous Cheysuli warrior, setting her long-fingered. hands on her small hips and stuck out her lips in an expression of pouting defiance.
"Alright, fine, I'm here," she said, and her voice was high and clear, like a bell. "Are you gonna eat me, or something?"
